The opportunity is here for an architect to join Rob Mills as his 2ic at the highest level of our practice. This is a unique position which demands an exceptional level of skill, ambition and commitment across all facets of our business.
At RMA, the design department is responsible for much more than envisioning and executing peerless architecture. Rob and his senior team are a critical part of every element of the practice, extending across marketing and new business to ensuring projects are buildable as promised. As a result, most of their work is client facing. Key to this role’s responsibilities is ensuring everyone, from our clients to our artisans, has a quality experience with RMA. Above all, this means always working to ensure the practice keeps its word.
The successful applicant for this role will naturally have outstanding design skills. They will also be creative, committed, organised and process driven. They will balance a love of the craft with clear commercial acumen. They must be generous with their expertise within the studio, always helping elevate the work of others just as they are always elevating the reputation of RMA itself. Finally, as a key face of the practice, they will naturally be well spoken, well written and well dressed.

The role
Based in the head office in Prahran, the 2ic needs to be aligned with RMA’s design aesthetic and have complete knowledge of our processes, standards of production and construction documentation and be able to contribute to what has already made this a successful firm.
They should have a complete understanding of the processes required to successfully approve buildings through Town Planning and to balance the intent of RMA designed buildings and council regulations. Most importantly, they need to be a leader and teacher of highly skilled and trained people.
Key tasks:
• Oversee and managing the design and planning team
• Show a high competency in the co-ordination of consultants and strategic management of authority approvals
• Managing clients and projects
• Working with the marketing and client acquisition team in securing new clients
• Producing presentations to help aid in the acquisition of new clients
• Managing and tracking projects to ensure all deadlines are met
• Managing projects and team deliverables against resources and financial targets
• Contributing to monthly budgeting and forecasting meetings
• The quality control of all production
• Mentoring & coaching team members
Your Experience:
• Senior Design Architect with strong design intuition and natural skill
• 8-10 years’ experience
• Strong, local and or international experience at leading design firms
• Australian registered Architect
• Proficient in Victorian and NSW planning codes and BCA/ NCC regulations
• Must have experience in taking projects from concept design to practical completion
• Proficient in both design and planning as well as construction documentation
• Residential experience essential, high end residential experience desirable
• An inherent interest in sustainable architecture and practice
• Proficient in Revit, Microsoft office packages, (Adobe desirable)
• Strong communication, collaboration, leadership and mentoring skills and experience
• Demonstrated experience in leading a team
• Commercial and business acumen
