Projects

Ross St, Toorak
The new timber, zinc and concrete Ross Street home is a study in surprise. The sharp angularity of the concrete façade and zinc awning blades invoke a clean modernist aesthetic. Inside, the light and mood softens immediately with a rendered steel sculptural staircase as the pivotal ground floor focus, combined with the interiors created by Hassell designers Scott Walker and Robert Backhouse. As a true example of bringing the outdoors in, frameless glass windows seamlessly link the interior to the same level outside, which includes a 13.5m pool running the length of the north wall.

Avenue Athol
A finely crafted and detailed modern family home, the Avenue Athol residence sits beautifully within a street of traditional tiled, pitched roof houses. Designed around an existing tennis court and its magnificent oak tree, the residence combines a cutting edge, light filled contemporary floor plan, including downstairs guest suite, with sound building processes and technology which is ecologically and financially sustainable. The result is a sleek, functional and inspiring home for children and adults of all ages to live in.

Goulburn Valley Highway, Alexandra
The addition of a large contemporary single room living area to an existing Federation house successfully merges old and new in a bold and simple design. Incorporating the kitchen, living and dining rooms within the single room structure enables the remainder of the existing house to function as an integrated, yet private, sleeping and study area. The impact of the building in its environment is softened by its long, lean lines, whilst all areas have unlimited visual access to surrounding views. The Goulburn Valley Residence was designed and built to brief in 10 months.

Ellerslie Place, Toorak
Ellerslie Place is a sophisticated contemporary townhouse. The design demonstrates a new approach to inner city living and is another successful example of Robert Mills Architect’s experience in the boutique development market. The dual townhouses and courtyards combine quality natural materials with innovative construction details to produce a resolutely modern appearance that retains the warmth and functionality of an inner Melbourne home.

Robert Mills Architects Head Office, Grattan Street, Prahran
Robert Mills Architects moved to their new 3000 sqft Head Office in Prahran in 2006. The space accommodates 12 architects and designers over two floors and is the perfect showcase for the company’s holistic approach to design. With carefully considered details on all aspects of the build, Grattan Street was awarded a Commendation at the Australian Interior Design Awards in 2007. RMA would like to thank Jacqueline Foti-Lowe from Hub Furniture, Melbourne, who sourced the furniture and lighting pieces.

Bayside Project Management Head Office, South Road, Hampton East
Being a Residential development firm Bayside Project Management required a space capable of inspiring clients and representing the quality of their work. With this in mind Robert Mills Architects’ forged the link between the sophisticated commercial interior space and a warm residential environment representative of BPM’s product.

Stonnington Place, Toorak
Stonnington Place marries cutting edge contemporary design and detailing without unnecessary extravagance. Efficiently designed and built, this family home accommodates four bedrooms and a movie room without sacrificing the complex detail design that is characteristic of many Robert Mills homes.

Washington Street, Toorak
Robert Mills Architects rejuvenated this original Wayne Gillespie designed home by maintaining many of the contemporary architectural elements and seamlessly integrating larger living areas. Innovative interior solutions using subtle materials and finishes accentuate the generous and spacious design of this beautiful home.

Greenknowe Court, Toorak
The iconic Greenknowe Court property is a testament to Melbourne’s reputation for exceptional residential architecture. At the time it was built it set a precedent for the luxury traditional home market, with careful craftsmanship and exquisite detailing throughout. Renowned Interior Designer, John Coote, complemented the architectural charm of this property with exotic opulence throughout.

Kenley Court, Toorak
This grand Italianate home was inspired by the client’s love of Italian design and architecture. An imposing Loggia façade sits within a walled forecourt reminiscent of a classic European courtyard garden. A large and practical double story floorplan orients towards the undercover outdoor space and Paul Bangay designed gardens.

Russell St, Toorak
Russell Street is a new contemporary two storey city residence. Inspired by the modern Parisian townhouse, Robert Mills Architects has created a classic family home with the character and integrity of European aesthetics. The front and rear garden areas are a testament to the continuing partnership between RMA and Paul Bangay.

Grant Avenue, Toorak
The challenge of designing a new home for an historic suburb is a Robert Mills speciality. Grant Avenue is a traditional Italianate home overlaid with the latest high performance building techniques. The historical details are plenty, including the imported limestone façade with hand-carved mouldings, and the roof tiles, antique doors and mantel pieces imported from France.

Toorak Road West, South Yarra
The historic Fawkner pub was transformed by Robert Mills Architects into 12 modernist apartments in 2004, richly rewarding both developers and home buyers alike. The project was the first contemporary residential development in South Yarra in that 10 year period and has since earned the respect of both Melbourne City Council and South Yarra residents. The integrity of the design has assisted RMA in obtaining subsequent planning permits in the area. The design and development stages were managed by RMA, ensuring the project was designed and built on budget and ahead of schedule.

Somers Avenue, Malvern
This new modernist townhouse posed various design challenges for Robert Mills Architects. Difficult site conditions, including steep slopes and restrictive covenants, ensured the design was reflective of the topography and it’s inner-city context. The boundaries between inside and out are deliberately blurred in order to maximize exposure to the Jack Merlo designed gardens which lead to valley views beyond.

Narveno Court, Hawthorn
Mastering the use of light and space, the Narveno Court property is a new residential two storey family home. Generously proportioned and robust in size both indoors and out, the home is open and relaxed. Window walls and an internal Japanese courtyard maximize natural daylight and promote a strong connection to the outdoor environment. Refined architectural and interior detailing was key to the success of this stunning, yet functional, property.

Glyndon Avenue, Brighton
Located in Melbourne’s premier bayside location, Glyndon Avenue was fully restored, renovated and extended throughout by Robert Mills Architects to create a family environment of sophisticated elegance. Combining Edwardian detailing and a modern functionality, this home is testament to the successful merger of old and new aesthetics.

Point King Road, Portsea
Located on the cliff top at Portsea, above Point King Beach, Ilyuka is recognized globally as one of Australia’s most outstanding coastal properties. The client’s brief was to inject new energy into the ‘grand old lady’ with respect to her existing character and aesthetics. Incorporating the building’s original Sante Fe style, a traditional Italian sand and cement render for the exterior was introduced, and 6 bathrooms and ensuites refitted. A new cook’s kitchen was created as the focal point of the home, linking the indoor and outdoor entertaining areas, and maximizing cinematic views across the bay.

St Georges Road, Toorak
The original home at St Georges Road did not portray its imposing position as one of Toorak’s largest land holdings. The owners requested that the property be transformed into a residence of grand magnitude. The exterior was updated to feature an impressive two storey entrance façade, creating a necessary focal point for the tree-lined drive, whilst the entire interior, both hard and soft furnishings, was renovated in accordance with the traditional style of the client and their home. This classic Toorak property boasts 12 primary rooms, a swimming pool and tennis court.

Stuart Street, Armadale
Formerly a commercial furniture store, Stuart Street’s interior was transformed by Salter Architects in 1990. Robert Mills’ recent refurbishment has retained the essence of the original interior design project and accentuated the light and space of the property through careful and considered use of art, furniture, sculpture and soft furnishings. Robert Mills would like to thank Louella Potter, Interior Designer, for her assistance on this project.

Martin Place, Sydney
Essential to the reinvention of the Witchery brand was the design of its retail stores. Commissioned by Peter Lew to redesign the stores in line with updated brand values, Robert Mills Architects imbued 10 retail stores nation wide with a more luxurious, opulent design aesthetic. During this successful 3 year partnership new flagship stores were designed and built in every capital city of Australia, including the premier store in Sydney’s Martin Place.
